Schnoodle = Miniature Schnauzer x Poodle
The Schnoodle is a hybrid breed that is created when crossing a Miniature Schnauzer with a Toy Poodle.
The benefits associated with first generation Schnoodles include, a more diverse genetic makeup than purebreds, reducing possibilities of disease and other genetic conditions that affect the parent breeds.
Schnoodles are hypoallergenic (unlikely to cause allergy in humans) and non-shedding. Schnoodles are an excellent breed for anyone wanting a lap dog, family dog, therapy dog or even a performance dog.
Schnoodles have the willingness to please and learn of a poodle mixed with the athleticism of a Schnauzer. The Schnoodle is lovable, playful and adorable pet suitable for many lifestyles. Schnoodles are loyal and devoted companions that will be social with all members of the family.
Schnoodles are the perfect pet for a family with young children as they are small and playful, they have the perfect energy levels for children to play with but are not so large that they are overwhelming for young children.
Size and Colouring
An immense variability can occur amongst puppies of the same breed and even the same litter, this is influenced by the genetic make-up of each individual pup, no pup is the same, some pups will appear more Poodle-like and others more Schnauzer. Therefore, it is impossible to predict the exact size a pup will grow to, but they will be a relatively small sized dog weighing approximately 4.5-9kg and reaching 20-30cm in height.
The colours of a Schnoodles coat also vary in each litter, with the possibility of anything from white, cream, black, silver, apricot, black and white or black and tan. Here at Kruizen Kennels we generally have Schnoodle pups with black, salt and pepper, and phantom coloured coats.
Maintenance and other needs
Schnoodles have a soft wavy coat however, it can grow either curly or wiry depending on the genetic contributions of each puppy.
They are a non-shedding breed, the amount of grooming required is dependent on the type of coat each individual pup has but all Schnoodles will require some grooming and clipping, as their coat will not fall out. Dogs with a more predominantly poodle type coat should be brushed regularly to prevent matting and knotting.
Schnoodle ears, as with all floppy eared breeds, need cleaning regularly or they may become infected, for more information about ear and eye cleaning please check our grooming page.
Around the eyes should also be cleaned daily to prevent buildup eye discharge and tear staining. Additionally, if you choose to keep the traditional Schnauzer-looking beard it will require trimming and cleaning to prevent buildup of food.
Schnoodles are a small breed of dog that only require low amounts of exercise, this can be short, intensive activity or longer, mild activity.
As Schnoodles are quite small they are suitable for those living in an apartment or with a small yard on the condition they receive daily exercise.
As Schnoodles are very intelligent dogs it is important to incorporate puppy preschool into your training routine, not only is it good for obedience but the puppy’s ability to socialize will be strengthened.
Furthermore, Schnoodles as with all ‘oodle’ breeds would benefit from ongoing training even after puppy stage is over to stimulate their cognitive processing.
Schnoodles make excellent family pets, they love children and being the centre of attention. They are happy, loyal and intelligent companions that love to play.
Schnoodles are also great watchdogs, taking after their Schnauzer parent.
